Climate Change Could Last Forever

We need to understand what’s happening when someone tells us the extreme climate events this summer are just bad weather. There’s a big difference, because climate change could last forever unlike the trusty cycle of the seasons. We wrote this post to remind us of the difference. Weather is what happens tomorrow. Climate change could be forever.

Climate Change Could Last For a Very Long Time

This post is not about the causes of climate changing. It is about how long the change could endure. The periods between the ice ages lasted longer than we could fathom in our minds. The reality is climate change could last for centuries if Earth’s systems flip into a new mode.

Weather is a collective term for the cloudiness, humidity, and temperature today, and whether a storm is likely tomorrow. However, climate by comparison is the average weather in a particular place over several decades. Weather can change in a few hours. Climate change takes hundreds, thousands, even millions of years and that’s the catch.

Climate Change Takes a Long Time to Reverse Out

Climate change could last for a very long time. It could take hundreds, even thousands of years to reverse what is happening now. We have become accustomed to undo buttons on our computers. These only exist in the digital world, and in our imagination.

Several things influence climate including the angle of the sun’s rays. The sun beams down on the tropics, whereas in Greenland it is low on the horizon for most of winter. The force with which the sun penetrates, and the time the heat remains depends on the chemical composition of Earth’s atmosphere.

These factors have changed since humans invented machines two hundred years ago. Believe it or not, this is threatening the cocoon in which we exist.

I tripped over a shrinking bank balance and fell into the writing gig unintentionally. This was after I escaped the corporate world and searched in vain for ways to become rich on the internet by doing nothing. Despite the fact that writing is no recipe for wealth, I rather enjoy it. I will not deny I am obsessed with it when I have the time. I live in Margate on the Kwazulu-Natal south coast of South Africa. I work from home where I ponder on the future of the planet, and what lies beyond in the great hereafter. Sometimes I step out of my computer into the silent riverine forests, and empty golden beaches for which the area is renowned. Richard
