In a previous post, we discussed what to do in preparation for floods and what to do during them. Today, we’d like to discuss what to do after. Once again, we will be basing our tips on the Canadian Government‘s Manuel on flood emergencies. Keep reading for more info below!

After A Flood
Before re-entering home:
- As mentioned in our previous post, do not return home after an evacuation unless advised by authorities.
- If the power was not turned off prior to your house being flooded, do not re-enter until an electrician checks for safety.
- The main electrical panel should be checked by an electrician to ensure functionality.
- Do not use any flooded appliances as they are a risk of electric shock.
When re-entering home:
- Check for safety of your building’s structure: does it look sturdy or worn out?
- Check for holes in the walls and floors.
- Look out for glass and other harmful waste.
- Pay attention to the water:
- Flooded water is contaminated with pollutants that could cause infections and diseases so be careful of it;
- Check your tap water/drinking water and if you suspect it is polluted, do not consume it!
- Check your local regulations on what to do with flooded household items.
- If you weren’t able to save some documents in your emergency kit then freeze the damaged ones until you need them.
- It is important to keep a record, in video or picture form, about all the flood damages in your house.
- On that note, ensure to register the amount of damage with your insurance and local town.
We hope these tips could be helpful in the case of a flood emergency. If you’d like more information, check out the full document by the Canadian Government: www.getprepared.gc.ca
