So, the earthquake is over. All is well and you are alive! What now you might ask? What do I do? Well, that’s why we’re here with another post about hurricanes and this time, it is about how to handle the aftermath of it!
Okay so at this point, you might be tired of reading all of these tips in bullet format and we get it! However, trust us when we say that you’d rather be prepared even after an earthquake has passed! The danger is not over yet so please bear with us and pay attention to the following points.

- Keep calm. Yes, you’ve heard that a thousand times but stress won’t help you with anything! So keep calm and help others if you are able! Help your family first then check on neighbors.
- As always, listen to the radio and try to stay informed about the instructions by the authorities.
- Wear protective clothing to prevent injury
- Do not re-enter your home unless it is safe to do so. If you are suspicious about its safety, do not re-enter.
- Power will most likely be out so unplug broken lights and appliances to avoid fire when power turns back on.
- Brick walls could be very prone to collapsing during aftershocks so make sure to stay away.
- On that topic, beware of aftershocks: smaller, softer earthquakes following the big one.
- Wherever you go, make sure to have your emergency kit and make sure someone knows where you are!
- I know we said stay calm, but that doesn’t mean that the danger is gone! You should still be cautious! Especially with electricity. Do not turn the power on until you’ve circled around your home with a flashlight and checked that there is no leakage of gas, chemicals, and things as such! (Leaked gas smells like rotten eggs just an FYI).
- Two things you should know about water after an earthquake:
- If it is on: stock up! Fill up your bathtub, containers, whatever you have! Just in case it might go out.
- If it is off: check the hot water tank as there might be some there and again, stock up!
- If you have pets, in your emergency plan, you should have identified places they could be taken to so ensure that is done.
