The International Copper Association has announced a roadmap for its members to reduce emissions towards net zero by 2050. Its press release details how essential this is, given the mineral’s role in all aspects of energy generation, storage, transmission and copper in batteries too. We are particularly pleased this program extends from Scope 1 through to Scope 3 emissions.
Levels of Emissions Relating to Copper in Batteries
World Economic Forum, among others classifies the sources of emissions as follows:
- Scope 1 emissions come directly from companies producing products, for example copper in batteries.
- Scope 2 emissions arise indirectly from companies using these products, example battery makers.
- Scope 3 emissions are the consequence of consumers using their products, for example in smartphones.
In case you are a consumer feeling good, you are outside the ambit of Scope 1 and 2 consider this. Deloitte told World Economic Forum “Scope 3 emissions are nearly always the big one.” In fact, they often account for more than 70% of a business’ carbon footprint.
International Copper Association Targets
International Green Car Congress confirms the following targets for 2030, 2040, and 2050:
- Scope 1 Emissions: 30% to 40%, 70% to 80%
- Scope 2 Emissions: 30% to 40%, 70% to 80%
- Scope 3 Emissions: 10%, 30% to 40%, 60% to 70%
Reducing Scope for 1 and 2 Emissions
The Copper Alliance suggests four strategies for reducing Scope 1 and 2 emissions. These include decarbonizing electricity, and introducing alternative fuels. As well as electrifying more equipment responsibly, and using more energy-efficient methods.
Cutting Scope 3 Emissions from Copper in Batteries
Reducing Scope 3 emissions may be a tougher nut to crack, given the wide variety of consumers. Decarbonizing electricity, and introducing alternative fuels will certainly help. Although the long-term answer may lie in increased awareness and participation in the circular economy, including recycling copper in batteries.
We are somewhat concerned about the hockey-stick effect in the International Copper Association strategy. Do they envisage accelerating energy savings? Or are they hoping ‘everything will come out right on the day’?
