Higher summer temperatures, and record storms suggest something is afoot with our climate. Certainly, it is becoming clearer we could exceed the 1.5° C target globally. And start flooding low-lying coastal areas by 2050 according to an Inside Unmanned Systems report on September 28, 2022. We therefore need to cast around and see what we can do about global warming now. This could include autonomous deliveries beyond the visual line of sight.
The Old-Fashioned Way of Delivering Things
Pony Express mail deliveries were by exhausted riders on sweating horses, or so we are told. We still receive Christmas cards courtesy of friendly post people. Even our virtual orders arrive thanks to courier drivers in vans. But still using real people this way does add an energy tax, because of their weight.
That’s why Inside Unmanned Systems says it is time to take the people out of the process. We might agree, provided we can re-skill them and they gain rewarding new roles. The website envisages aerial deliveries beyond the visual line of sight, making a real contribution to the energy crisis. That’s because:
- Unmanned aerial vehicles are usually smaller and consume less energy.
- Their lighter weight opens the door to using alternative forms of propulsion.
- They can also perform other tasks including inspecting hard-to-reach sites.
We should like to add that those aerial vehicles also operate on versatile batteries, and this ticks off one more reason to stop using fossil fuel.
More Deliveries Beyond the Visual Line of Sight
So far so good, and at this stage it almost seems like case closed on this one. However, the discussion is not over yet, because unmanned flights beyond direct operator sight require approval in advance. And that can shut the doors on deliveries ordered just in time.
We are not for a moment suggesting we should drop our guard when it comes to aerial safety. Moreover, we believe that’s especially the case over areas where people live. However, we do believe Inside Unmanned Systems have a point that’s worth exploring. Every little bit helps, as we said.
