Dell Laptop Batteries What You Should Know

Dell provides a ‘standard one-year warranty’ on its laptop batteries. It says Dell laptop batteries ‘are a consumable item and battery performance reduces over time and use’. Its website goes on to recommend only replacing them with their proprietary equivalents. However, Dell does provide DIY tips on how to so without using an authorized service technician.

Lithium-Polymer Dell Laptop Batteries

Dell uses lithium polymer batteries in its laptops on account of their slim shape and longer life. This however has consequential potential for batteries swelling leading to them bulging and being difficult to remove.

This swelling can reduce laptop performance, and damage the enclosure or internal components. The battery requires replacement before this happens, once the user has exhausted all the remaining charge. This involves disconnecting the AC adapter and using the computer until the device shuts down. Thereafter removing bulging Dell laptop batteries may not be as simple as it sounds.

The battery is only safe when the power button no longer turns the system on. None the less, it’s important not drop it, mutilate it, or shock it. Never use a sharp object to dislodge it from its containment either, or apply undue pressure. If you penetrate the outer cover chemicals could escape and damage other components in the computer.

Contact an authorized Dell representative if the battery does not easily come free. Their fee should be low compared to an expensive repair and you will not risk denting your main warranty. Some newer Dell laptops have semi-permanent batteries requiring special tools. Dell does not confirm claims that some pirate batteries are compatible with its machines.

We can’t recommend opening up Dell laptops still under guarantee for any reason. However, if you have an old machine and you can afford the risk, then that’s your decision to take.

I work from home where I ponder on the future of the planet, and what lies beyond in the great hereafter. Sometimes I step out of my computer into the silent riverine forests, and empty golden beaches for which the area is renowned. Richard
