World Health Organization says it is ‘very worried’ about the spread of Covid-19 in Europe. As the continent battles a fresh wave of infections. WHO Regional Health Director Dr. Hans Kluge warned BBC a half million deaths could follow by March 2022. Meanwhile NBC News cites experts warning the European COVID surge could repeat in United States.
Which Alarm Bells Ringing in Europe Cause Concern?
Dr. Kluge attributes the European coronavirus surge to less face masking, and low vaccination rates. However, the arriving winter season and the increased virulence of Delta variant are also contributing to the threat.
‘Covid-19 has once again become the number one cause of mortality in our region,’ he explains. ‘We know what needs to be done in order to fight the virus,’ he continues. But mandatory vaccines should still remain ‘the last resort’.
‘Before that, there are other means like the COVID pass,’ Dr. Kluge insists. ‘This is not a restriction of liberty, rather it is a tool to keep our individual freedom.’
How European COVID Surge Could Repeat in United States
World Health Organization reports two million cases across Europe in the past week. Now European Union population is 445 million, the same order of magnitude as United States. Winter is starting to bite in both parts of the world too, although they each have a fair average vaccination rate.
But the situation could spin out of control in Eastern Europe, where a third of the population do not trust their health systems. European Union, by comparison has an 18% lack-of-trust factor. Have our governments done sufficient to convince their populations to get vaccinated? Could the European COVID surge repeat in United States.
Tom Wenseleers is an evolutionary biologist and biostatistician at KU Leuven University in Belgium. He warns ‘U.S. should take heed of the situation unfolding across Europe’ according to NBC News. ‘Convincing as many people to have their vaccines should be the top priority,’ he continues. ‘Along with setting up booster campaigns for those most at risk.’
