Hopes a Third Vaccine Dose Will Be Durable

There’s evidence a second dose of Pfizer or Moderna COVID vaccine strengthens our protection. The makers suggested this from the beginning, and now Johnson & Johnson is recommending a booster shot too. Two doses seem to deliver lasting protection from severe disease, although the chance of infection increases gradually. But Dr. Anthony Fauci hopes a third vaccine dose will be durable.

U.S. Official Rollout Could Begin Within Weeks

Health officials are waiting for official approval for the third round of Pfizer and Moderna, according to CNN Health. Dr. Fauci supports the idea, citing Israeli studies showing a decrease of infections among those with the extra treatment.

He told a media briefing September 2, 2021 ‘There is good reason to believe that a third dose will actually be durable. And if it is durable, then you’re going to have very likely a three-dose regimen being the routine regimen.’

However, Food and Drug Administration FDA will only officially consider the matter at a meeting due September 17, 2021. That’s cutting it fine, given an earlier White House decision to offer third booster doses beginning September 20.

A Durable Third Vaccine Dose Provides Fresh Hope

We need to downgrade COVID-19 from a pandemic to endemic status soon as we can. Sure, the disease will still be with us after that, but the effects will be manageable. And we can get our economies back on track again.

Pfizer is ready to meet the White House deadline. However, the Moderna third shot may only be available a few weeks later. There are ongoing discussions among health specialists concerning which adult groups should receive.

It’s been a long haul to get to the stage where medical specialists hope a third vaccine dose will be durable. We’ve had our hopes raised and dashed before, as governments hesitate and vaccine naysayers decline to participate. But we hang on to our hope we are finally on track to beat COVID-19 back. Because hope is what sustains us in troublesome times.
