Immuno-compromised people have a greater chance of infection, because their natural immunity is weaker than usual. This state may be permanent due to an inherited genetic condition, or as a result of current medication. David Porter, director of cell therapy and transplantation at Penn Medicine recommends erring on the side of caution with COVID-19. American regulators agree. They approved boosters for immuno-compromised people on August 13, 2021.
US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Approval in Principle
The FDA amended its standing rules, by allowing immuno-compromised Americans to get an additional COVID jab as a booster. Because this will help 10 million people, including transplant recipients and cancer patients stave off infection and illness.
US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) will shortly authorize health workers to go ahead with this treatment. And to begin dispensing the approved boosters to immuno-compromised people. This ‘Two Department’ rule is an essential checkpoint in the interests of citizen safety.
However, the United States is not the first nation to take this step. Several other countries have begun providing booster jabs to some groups according to BBC News. This is in line with expert opinion two-dose Moderna and Pfizer vaccines, or single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccines may not fully protect people with weakened immune systems.
But It’s Boosters for Immuno-Compromised People Only
There’s no sign of general approval of booster shots though, as lobbied by Pfizer. Although we do know antibody protection from vaccines may wear off over time. Time will tell about this later.
Dr. Anthony Fauci told BBC Thursday boosters may only be needed for those whose immune systems are low. ‘We don’t feel at this particular point that apart from the immune-compromised, we don’t feel we need to give boosters right now.’
However other countries are forging ahead. Israel has provided booster shots to people over 60 who were vaccinated at least five months earlier. And UK, France and Germany are considering it too, as the elderly queue for their boosters in China.
