We ought to take a holistic view of the entire battery-life cycle, if we wish to truly speak of renewable energy. Where do the raw materials come from, and which chemicals and energy source do we use when processing them? There a several more checkpoints before we reach the point when we recycle the materials. Today we review how Porsche repurposes its own Taycan batteries.
How Does Porsche Source Its Taycan Batteries?
The Porsche Taycan is a battery-electric luxury sports sedan and estate car. PC Mag describes it as a high-end model, with fast charging capability via plug-in or inductive plate. The battery manufacturer is a mystery to us, although top-end models do churn out impressive performance.
Porsche relentlessly tests a sample of its Taycan cars, and by all accounts puts them through a grueling experience. The program is so extensive that it has accumulated over 4,000 spent Taycan electric car batteries.
We gather between the lines that Porsche developed a soft spot for these ‘unsung heroes’. So it decided to re-use them in a new energy storage system at its Panamera Macan plant in Germany. If you wondered how Porsche repurposes spent Taycan batteries, now you know.
Porsche Repurposes Taycan Batteries On Large Scale
PC Mag describes Porsche’s energy storage system as being ‘roughly the size of two basketball courts’. By National Basketball Association standards, that would make it some 100 feet by 100 feet.
“The project provides important insights into how to supply an automotive plant with energy in an intelligent fashion,” a Porsche spokesperson commented. “It also facilitates the expansion of an adaptable power grid.”
The repurposed electric vehicle batteries have an estimated lifespan (in this application) of ten years. Although Porsche may swap out defective modules as the years go by.
Battery recharging is via a combination of solar panels, and other renewables. But will other electric vehicle manufacturers adopt how Porsche repurposes its used test batteries? Only time will tell.
