If it looks too good to be true on the internet, it just might actually be too good to be true. That said, there are many honest dealers offering exceptional value out there. These folks discount their prices because they have lower overheads, but maintain the same quality standards. This is our business model at UPS Battery Center. However, not all internet batteries are the same…
The Day Cheap Internet Batteries Let Ridwan Ithnin Down

Take the case of Ridwan Ithnin from Yishun, in the northeastern corner of Singapore. We gather he bought an electric scooter at a bargain price on the internet. He received 45% burns after it exploded in his flat while charging overnight.
This is not an isolated case. Three days later, another family escaped through the window of their second floor apartment at night.
This was after an electric bicycle caught fire in the public corridor outside. The Singapore Civil Defense Force thinks cheap internet batteries are to blame.
Singapore Flooded by Cheap PMD’s on Taobao
Mr Denis Koh, chairperson of PMD enthusiast group Big Wheel Scooters Singapore, blames cheap imports from Chinese e-markets for the fires. Batteries for personal mobile devices from reputable brands cost $200 to $300, he says. “Something’s got to give if you can get a whole e-scooter for that price.” And that could increase the danger of fire.

Unbranded personal mobile internet batteries can cost as little as $60, according to general manager of PMD retailer Falcon PEV, Victor Lee. “On the whole, branded batteries do have better quality and they handle heat and stress better,” he advises. And heat is one of the main causes of electronics failure.
He goes on to explain that faulty batteries may fail to stop charging after a full load. And this may cause them to overheat to combustion point. It’s best to confirm a battery’s brand before purchasing, especially on the internet. Also, make sure to recharge it during daytime in a well-ventilated space where we can keep an eye on it.
