Jungheinrich Plucks Low Hanging Apples

The Jungheinrich Group is one of three top global providers of material-handling equipment, warehousing, and material-flow-engineering solutions. Its range of forklifts is legendary. To be specific, they produce a series ranging from electric pedestrian, to units capable of reaching racking 14 meters above.

What the Jungheinrich Group Has To Do With Batteries

That’s an easy one to answer since the Jungheinrich Group manufactures its own lithium batteries for its range of forklifts.

Moreover. it told Creamer Media’s Engineering News that it now offers an extended five-year performance warranty. This may have something to do with Apple denting lithium-ion’s reputation.

The Group’s warranty boils down to repairing or replacing batteries if capacity falls below 65% of original power. Interestingly, Jungheinrich is the only player in its industry that makes its own batteries. This presumably gives it greater confidence than its competitors.

The Group manufactures 24, 48, and 80-volt lithium-ion batteries. Moreover, the warranty covers them for 5 years, or 10,000 operating hours. “Our lithium-ion batteries are intelligent. They can communicate with both the vehicle and the charging equipment,” their CEO says.

“That means they protect themselves autonomously from incorrect handling. While at the same time adjusting ideally to the application at hand”. The company has also been making lithium-ion powered trucks since 2011. Therefore, we shall watch how this story rolls out with interest.

The Jungheinrich Group launched in 1953 and it introduced its first four-wheel lift truck that same year. It has an established reputation for being innovative. But within the bounds of solid mechanical engineering.

Do you think making its own batteries is a judgement on the lithium industry? Certainly this appears to be a low hanging apple to exploit. Making lithium batteries and heavy goods-handling equipment is a combination we have not come across before.

About Author

I have been writing about batteries and energy storage for more than ten years, and have published over 4,000 articles on this website. During that time, I have researched developments across lead-acid, lithium-ion, sodium-ion, flow batteries, and emerging energy-storage technologies. My goal is to explain complex battery concepts in clear, practical language that anyone can understand. My writing career began unexpectedly after leaving the corporate world. What started as a search for a new direction gradually became a fascination with batteries, renewable energy, and the science that powers modern life. Writing may not have made me wealthy, but it has given me the opportunity to explore an industry that continues to evolve in remarkable ways.
