Batteries prefer to remain at comfortable temperatures humans prefer too. Outside of those ranges, they may overheat in summer or become sluggish in winter. EVs cope well throughout the year, provided you keep your cool with your electric car battery. Read on and we’ll share how easy this is.

How Most Electric Car Batteries Stay Cool

The process is mostly automatic nowadays. That’s because new electric cars come with battery thermal management systems. And these are able to heat, or cool their batteries according to ambient temperature. But they do draw their energy from the main electric car battery, and this affects the driving range.

However there are exceptions, particularly that old stalwart the Nissan Leaf. In this case, you have to think on your electric vehicle’s behalf. Although what follows should also benefit vehicles with battery thermal management systems too.

  • Rapid charging raises battery temperature on all EVs, especially in hot climates.
  • Always try to park in shady areas, or indoors if possible if you can’t find a cool spot.
  • This reduces power loss due to thermal management, and is good for the vehicle too.
  • Besides, when you return your car it will be pleasant cool, and not baking hot.

That’s how to keep your cool with your electric car battery when recharging.

How Your Charging Rate Is Also Important

Using a rapid DC charger is great when we need faster recharges for long road trips, and urgent situations. They are generally speaking harmless too, provide you have adequate thermal management protection. However, there are a few things to remember.

  • The batteries are warm after driving. Help the recharging process by allowing them to cool first.
  • Secondly, remember our earlier advice about recharging indoors, or in a cool shady spot.

This strategy should help ensure a slightly shorter recharge duration, and could prolong your battery lifespan too.
