Fire Rescue.1 announced news of lithium-ion batteries exploding in a Portland University classroom. We don’t have an official fire department report to hand. In the interim, we try to unravel two questions that trouble us. How could an incident like this happen, and secondly what was the likely cause?
The Time Line of Lithium-Ion Battery Explosions
The incident occurred on April 15, 2025, in the Portland State University Engineering Building. We understand that students were using batteries to power devices in a fourth floor classroom, where the incident occurred.
Some two dozen firefighters arrived at the site around 10:30 a.m., to find the classroom full of smoke. They evacuated more that 100 students and staff from the building for two hours, while they assessed the situation.
We understand the students ignored the first battery explosion, assuming it was an isolated incident. However, they soon found themselves in an emergency situation, when all the remaining batteries exploded.
The characteristics of this incident appear to confirm it involved a series of lithium-ion batteries exploding. By all accounts, these appear to have been small possibly cell-types, because the other floors were back in use within two hours.
Possible Causes For These Multiple Battery Failures
We turned to the Department of Fire and Emergency Rescue Services, for advice on preventing lithium-ion battery fires. They reminded us how these batteries hold a relatively large amount of energy, and contain highly flammable material.
The following scenarios could lead to lithium-ion battery fires, they say, although this is thankfully seldom the case:
- Onboard Defects: Faulty manufacturing standards or materials.
- Charging: Using incorrect or faulty equipment, or over-charging.
- Overheating: Internal problems, or exposure to high heat.
- Faults: Short circuiting, battery malfunction, or system failure.
- Abuse: Dropping, piercing, crushing, long periods of vibration.
We’ll wait and see what the official investigation finds. In the meantime, out of interest, what do you think was the root cause behind these lithium-ion batteries exploding?
