New York Post confirms new COVID strains in South Africa and Brazil are emerging. Moreover, Director of National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Dr. Anthony Fauci warns these may be ‘more ominous’ variants. Therefore, there’s a good chance of asymptomatic, and early onset infections entering North America undetected. Thus it’s our duty to understand them, and take care.
These Mutants Add to Concerns Arriving in US from UK
We are grateful Dr. Fauci has a handle on these threats personally. We have already reported on the virulent strain spreading north from England into Scotland and Wales. However, it appears the one active in Brazil and South Africa could be more ominous. We wish we could have avoided those words, but they are straight from Dr. Fauci.
People are spreading the new COVID Ssrains in Brazil and South Africa – and the ones in United Kingdom and North America too. That’s the person standing next to you in the checkout queue and the subway, and that’s you too. There are two parties involved in the transaction, and we both know what we ought to do.
Broader Impact of New COVID Strains from South Africa and Brazil
American Association for Advancement of Science warns these new strains may cause more reinfections, and require updated vaccines. Kai Kupferschmidt, infectious disease contributor in Science Mag describes how rogue variants could cause people to ‘remain susceptible to reinfection’. This may be because those strains are sufficiently different.
World Health Organization met on January 12, 2021 to discuss these issues. It calls on the nations of the world to remain vigilant, and share more information to track mutations. U.S. Centers for Disease Control believes the new UK strain ‘could become the predominant variant in the United States in March’. No nation is an island, nor are we or you either.
