The string of New York City e-bike fires was showing no signs of cooling when we last visited the topic. In fact, the City has been in a quandary since then. How should it accommodate the popular delivery service, while maintaining public safety too?
New York City legislators attended to the safety issue by banning the sale of non-UL-certified e-bikes first. But this decision, effective September 26, 2023 spawned another tricky question demanding an answer. What should the City do with 60,000 New York delivery workers, riding non-UL-certified e-bikes they obtained legally before the embargo?
New York Offers a Free Exchange of City E-Bikes
It’s a bold move indeed to offer a legal-e-bike free, in exchange for one suddenly become inappropriate under a New York ordinance. Uber, Uber Eats, Door Dash, Propel Bikes, Bosch, and Tern did previously offer an alternative scheme under less-than-favorable conditions. For that reason perhaps, their ‘Equitable Commute Project’ only had two takers.
We don’t have full details of the official New York City e-bike response yet. However, it’s common knowledge in the media that it aims to put a stop to substandard lithium-ion e-bike batteries throughout Big Apple. This problem is due to shady importers bringing in substandard products that are failing, and harming people.
More Information About This Innovation Going Forward
Global Cycling suggests New York e-bikers could be able to “hand in their old, non-certified e-bikes and e-scooters”. And receive “a fire-safe replacement for free or for little cost” at an unknown, but approaching date. However, more than that remains uncertain, as the most recent announcement merely provides authority to develop the program.
None the less, we do agree with Global Cycling that this latest New York City e-bike policy is a step in the right direction to resolve this issue. In the backs of our minds we wonder whether importers of rogue e-bikes should walk away without any sanction. But we’ll leave that to the legal brains to sort out.
