Porsche Taycan S Midrange Still Hyper Fast

Porsche first unveiled its 4-door Taycan electric coupé at the 2015 Frankfurt motor show under the code name Mission E. The name roughly translates as “lively young steed” in Turkish referring to the dancing horse on the brand’s logo. The newly-released Porsche Taycan S Midrange is not as fast as the Turbo and Turbo S. However, it none the less manages 0 to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds. And a top speed of 155 mph according to Engadget.

Drive Train Fundamentals of Porsche Taycan S Midrange

The Porsche Taycan S Midrange depends on the J1 platform for structure. It deploys a permanent-magnetic synchronous motor on each axle within this protective cradle. Power reaches the front wheels via a single-speed gearbox. While the rear of the Porsche has a two-speed gearbox with variable power.

The first gear at the rear provides maximum performance, while the second delivers top speed and efficiency. A single lithium-ion battery pack sends power to all four wheels. This is low slung to keep the center of gravity down. The battery has ‘foot garage’ recesses for rear-seat passengers to improve legroom. There are five different driving modes that manage how the drive train performs.

Engadget has compared the Turbo and Turbo S variants with the newly-announced Porsche Taycan S Midrange version. It says the latter’s drive train delivers “up to 420 kW (around 630 horsepower), compared to 500 kW for the Taycan Turbo and 560 kW for the Turbo S”.

The Porsche press release confirms the new midrange version will have two battery options. However, both 79.2 and 93.4 kWh ones will have a slightly improved driving range over the Turbo and Turbo S . This will come at the cost of “more subdued performance” though. We should think the 0 to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds mentioned will beat most internal combustion engines.

If you need to know the price you may not want to spend that much. None the less we’ll mention the two options cost $103,800, and $110,380 respectively.
