A number of things stand in the way of electric vehicle rollout on a scale that could make a climate difference. Availability of fast-charging services is a challenge in some parts. As is grid reliability in developing nations. The Register website says California-based Enovix has a rapid charging silicon anode lithium battery capable of doing so in ten minutes. Now that’s an ambitious claim but one definitely worth exploring.
Lithium-Ion Silicon Anode Rapid Battery Performance
The Enovix product uses silicon anode lithium-ion chemistry to charge from empty to full in less than 10 minutes according to the company. The Register continues by sharing the following additional information as provided to them:
- The Enovix battery maintains 93% of its capacity after 1,000 charges.
- It was ‘minimally affected’ after 6 months operation at elevated temperature.
Moreover, the U.S. Advanced Battery Corporation says the battery achieves a performance level it previously regarded mid- to long term.
Enovix Battery Performance Testing in Several Applications
The Register reports the silicon-anode lithium-ion chemistry is already testing in a ‘famous smartwatch’ by a top consumer electronics company. Furthermore, it quotes Enovix saying its proprietary architecture “eliminates the problems that come with using silicon as an anode”.
This implies they have resolved silicon’s traditional technical problems, like swelling which greatly reduces life cycle. This has until now secured the anode role for graphite, despite it having far less energy storage capacity than silicon
What This Might Mean for the Electric Vehicle Industry
If the Enovix rapid charging silicon anode lithium-ion battery sustains in the long run, then it could make a remarkable contribution. That’s partly because its fast charging capability could accelerate mass electric vehicle adoption.
Dare we say we could look forward to faster roll-out of renewable energy too? We have written about battery innovations in the past that showed great promise but faded away. Nonetheless, we wish Enovix bon voyage on its exciting journey, as they build out their production capacity.
