Replacing Apple Batteries Yourself: Advisory

Apple seems to having a bad run with its batteries again. This time the FAA doesn’t want a particular Apple Mac Pro on passenger planes. As this is a 2015 model we wondered whether the problem is associated with battery aging. This raises the question whether replacing Apple batteries yourself is a good idea.

What’s the Issue Replacing Apple Batteries Yourself

The company is naturally interested in the annuity income from handling replacements. It also needs to protect its own interests. This is probably why an app inside the phone displays a warning if someone else makes the swap.

However, the debate around replacing Apple batteries yourself goes deeper than that. CNBC says some Asian companies are adept at making fake versions that appear like the real thing. But do they perform to the same standard, and who are the battery manufacturers behind the brand? Apple is increasingly concerned about this because it takes the knock in breaking bad news.

Perhaps the Problem Lies in the Apple Supply Chain

Apple has hung onto this annuity income and refuses to supply its batteries direct to consumers. Unfortunately, this creates a costly supply chain involving a network of stores and 1,800 authorized U.S. dealers with access to genuine Apple batteries and parts.

Therefore, if you are considering replacing Apple batteries yourself you will probably find cheaper alternatives on the internet. However, you must know what you are buying, and have confidence it matches the original manufacturer’s spec. That’s because there are some loose cannons in the ‘battery wild west’ and lithium battery fires can cause serious harm.

We recommend choosing a proven supplier should you decide to go ahead and source Apple batteries from third parties instead. Put the device in a safe place outside the building in the event it overheats. Never attempt any job for which you are not fully technically competent.
