We should hold fast to our beliefs while the virus surges around us. The world has not changed. The seasons still flow, earth brings an abundance of new life in its season. The simple things to remember during surges are still the same too. Human behavior spreads the virus. We can control the spread if we do what our brains say we ought to do.

We cling to the familiar when the road is uphill. Social behavior is what spreads the virus, and we are social creatures. Not hugging, not kissing, and keeping our distance go against the essence of being human, which is togetherness. Our brains call us apart, but our emotions are stronger.
And so we walk about in the streets, ignoring simple things to remember during surges. If we wear our face masks, we wear them low slung below our noses in an act of defiance. We no longer bother about safe distancing. We are tired of doing it because it doesn’t work, we tell ourselves. But of course that’s not true.

We could still lose our jobs, even if we are young and strong enough to make it a walk in the park. Perhaps we could continue doing those simple things to remember during surges, for the sake of each other at least.
If that were the case, then we would continue wearing face masks, socially distancing, sanitizing hands, and isolating if necessary. This is the only way to control spread until we have a vaccine. Meanwhile, the natural world, the seasons roll on around us. Are we being silly about this? Or are we just being human …
