The EU Battery 2030+ Vision is a Europe-wide project to invent ‘the sustainable batteries of the future’. Moreover, this extends to ‘building a European battery cell manufacturing industry based on clean energy and circular economy’. The founders believe they have potential to seize the lead, if they combine their strengths and unite industry, researchers, policymakers, and the public.
Six Projects at the Heart of The EU Battery 2030+ Vision
Three Battery Development Projects
1… BAT4EVER aims to develop self-healing mechanisms to repair lost materials during repetitive cycles of charge and discharge. Then it hopes to achieve safe, higher performance lithium-ion batteries with extended lifetimes.
2… BIG-MAP on the other hand focuses on developing a radical shift leading to a dramatic acceleration of battery discovery. It intends spreading the new knowledge to boost EU advanced battery development and manufacturing.
3… But the HIDDEN project takes a more specific approach by applying self-healing to lithium batteries. Thereby it aims to increase their density 50% compared to current technology, enabling longer battery lifetime and higher energy storage capacity.
Three Battery Sensing Projects
4… INSTABAT gets closer to the action by developing ways to monitor charge, health, power, energy and safety in live operating cells. Then it envisages embedding smart sensing technologies in fully integrated battery cells.
5… However, SENSIBAT takes this technology further by monitoring anode, cathode, and electrolyte separately. The goal is to eliminate unnecessary battery processes, and enable faster and more accurate control of individual cells in a battery system during operation.
6… Finally, the SPARTACUS heart of The EU Battery 2030+ Vision envisages fast charging battery modules, without negative impact on lifetime / cycle life. Monitoring will be by advanced impedance sensors integrated in individual cells.
