The Origin of Dendrites Revealed By NMR

Researchers at Florida State University’s National High Magnetic Field Laboratory, have discovered the origin of dendrites. This is the scientific term for the tiny lithium-metal  needles, that form in a solid state battery during use. We report on the origin of dendrites revealed by the researchers on March 10, 2025.

Knowing The Origin of Dendrites  May Reveal More

This finding is important, because dendrites can cause a short circuit that leads to solid-state battery failure. This latest information gives us a much clearer picture of how dendrites originate. And this insight could help scientists develop more reliable and efficient solid batteries in future.

This potential for progress could have powerful knock-ons for the future of electric vehicles, energy storage systems, and implanted medical devices for example. This is why we decided to discuss the origin of dendrites, revealed this month for our followers.

The scientists used nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) to reveal the secrets behind dendrites formation. This technique probes molecular structures at the atomic level, far beyond the ability of human eyes. This time, the researchers were able to see a solid-state battery recycle as they watched.

Understanding Solid State Dendrites Is the First Step

“If you don’t understand the problem, it’s hard to address it,” explains the lead researcher. We’re trying to understand the mechanisms of dendrite formation in solids,” so we understand it better.

The team used a custom probe they developed, so they could see inside the battery as it charged and discharged many times. The tiny dendrite needles first appeared at the interface between the battery’s anode electrode and electrolyte.

Then a second batch of dendrites appeared in the middle of the solid electrolyte as well. When the two sets of tiny needles touched, the battery short-circuited. The researchers now had a comprehensive understanding of the origin of dendrites, revealed for the first time.
