Last week, we wrote to declare that the prep for the Solar Splash 2018 competition has started! Today, we’d like to talk about one of the teams competing at this year’s event: The UNM Student Solar Powerboat Team.
Who IS This Team?
The UNM solar boat team is New Mexico’s third team to enter the Solar Splash competition. The first two being 2016 and 2017’s UNM solar boat teams. Created in 2016, the team came in 4th place for their first time ever competing! Additionally, the 2017 team qualified in second place overall, second place in Visual Presentation and won the outstanding solar system design award. Talk about impressive!
Team Members:
The picture below is of the team members for the UNM Solar Splash team. There are 8 mechanical and 5 electrical engineering students on the team and they are directed by the great UNM professor Dr. Peter Vorobieff. Keep reading for more information on the individual students!

Daniel is a graduate student working towards earning his master’s degree at UNM, focusing on thermal sciences in fluids and heat transfers and he is a co-founder of the team!
Ally intends to join the work force after graduation and pursing her graduate degree after some real work experience.
Chris, Elisabeth, Erich, Keith, Kevin, Luis, and Ray will all be continuing to graduate school.
During the winter break the team has been busy setting up their internal structure and setting goals for the season and competition in June. The team is all excited to compete and to learn all they can this semester!
