Centers for Disease Control announced US kids aged 5 to 11 are now eligible for vaccines on November 2, 2021. What a hope this gives us. What a promise they might have a more COVID-free life than we adults have in the past two years. Depending of course if their parents pass the offering on, so freely given by their government.
How Will This ‘Watershed Moment Roll Out?
US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) signed the order off the night before. Federal and Drug Administration already approved the vaccine for kids, but they first had to authorize the procedure.
This is a watershed moment in the fight against the pandemic, CDC Director Rochelle Walensky told Washington Post at a media conference. Millions of families waited anxiously for this moment. Let their vaccinations begin. Let their education and extramural restart in earnest.
There are some 28 million US kids aged 5 to 11 now eligible for COVID-19 vaccines. The White House greeted the moment saying, ‘this allows parents to end months of anxious worrying about their kids. And reduce the extent to which children spread the virus to others.’
US Kids Aged 5 to 11 Now Eligible for Vaccines – The Catch
However, Washington Post was quick to point out ‘a substantial number of parents … remain distrustful of the vaccine’ and could bar their kids. There will also, inevitably be asymptomatic breakthrough cases that don’t test positive right away.
Therefore, this may not be the beginning of the end of the COVID threat for kids aged 5 to 11. However, it is the end of the beginning for this particular journey, at least for kids with supportive parents.
Therefore – just as is the case with adults – vaccinated kids will have to maintain safe distances. They will also need to keep sanitizing hands and wearing face masks a while longer. But at least we are making progress, and we give thanks for that.
