Using Cloth Face Coverings as Substitutes

There’s still a shortage of surgical masks and N-95 respirators, especially in outbreak hot spots. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends reserving these for health care workers and first responders in the front line.  It says simple face coverings help slow the spread of the virus. We share ways of making and using face coverings as substitutes in this post based on CDC advice.

Things to Note before Using Cloth Face Coverings as Substitutes

Homemade face coverings are not as effective as N-95 respirators and surgical face masks. They are however useful aides in stopping the virus spreading from infected persons. And we have seen some pretty stylish bandanas by people who want to use different types of masking.

However, and this is very important, avoid using face coverings as substitutes for masks on children under age two. Or anyone else who would be unable to remove a face mask that slipped out of position. Subject to these reservations, the CDC says these homespun solutions add value in these troubled times. Below is a video highlighting one way to make a DIY face mask. Check out Youtube for more suggestions.

How to Use a Homemade Face Covering to Best Effect

Face coverings must comprise multiple layers, and fit snugly to the side of the face when secured with ties. They must allow breathing freely without restrictions, and be suitable for washing or laundering.

They should also be washed routinely according to frequency of use. Using a washing machine should cleanse and sterilize them, according to the Centers for Disease Control post we link to below.

The same safety standards apply when using face coverings as substitutes for clinically approved ones. Be careful when removing any face mask. Do not touch your face afterwards, at least not before washing hands in soap and water for at least twenty seconds.
