As a smart user, it’s easy to get lost in clusters of online content – and social media isn’t helping. Most of the time, good reads are buried beneath content that has been monetized, or optimized to saturate most feeds. This means it’s particularly important to do your research if you want to be well informed, which is what led me to learn about the Earth Saviours Foundation.

Admittedly, I was surprised to learn how prolific this organization is as it is internationally recognized NGO, deservedly so.

What is the Earth Saviours Foundation?

The Earth Saviours Foundation is a non-governmental organization that is based in Haryana, India. It was founded in 2008 by Ravi Kalra, a social activist and environmentalist who is also a well-known yoga master. The foundation aims to better the lives of underprivileged civilians and advocates for environmental stewardship. They have several initiatives, which they call missions that are dedicated to humanitarian causes.

Old Age Home:

Kalra provides shelter to around 450 abandoned seniors and disabled people, with free meals and medical facilities. Many people who come to his shelter are suffering from critical conditions like HIV and other terminal illnesses.

The shelter also performs last rites and cremations. The deceased’s ashes are then transported to Haridwar for a holy bath in accordance to the Hindu religion towards salvation.

Care for the Mentally Challenged:

The Earth Saviours Foundation has a rescue centre for mentally ill people and is the first of its kind in India. Kalra scouts the roads in search of those in need. The Delhi police and government ministries also recognize the shelter as a resource of support for abandoned people.

Do Not Honk:

Noise pollution is one of the most pervasive issues in India. Vehicles honk to navigate through unruly traffic and signals. While the law prohibits the use of horns at traffic lights and other quiet zones, roads are bustling with the sounds of horns. The Earth Saviours Foundation advocates against honking through banners, and public awareness campaigns. This has forced around 90 per cent of commercial blue-line buses to convert their pressure horns to low density ones. The Delhi police have been partners in helping facilitate the organization’s goals by imposing hefty fines on drivers who honk for no reason. The country now declares January 1st as “No Honking Day.”

Shelter for Destitute Women:

The shelter is determined to rehabilitate homeless women, and those who are victims of sexual and physical abuse.

Stray Animal Heaven:

Volunteers from the Earth Saviour Foundation are rescuing stray cows from open roads and re-placing them in open fields where they will be safe.

Kalra is doing some amazing work! If you want to learn how you can help him and join his cause, visit the foundation’s website and stay tuned for our other posts about the foundation!
