  • Three types of AA batteries
  • A multimeter on the right setting
  • A small digital clock
  • A video camera to record

Test the voltage in each battery across the electrodes using the multimeter to check they are fresh. Write the results down per battery type. The first step to determine which AA battery brand is best is to load each torch with a set of batteries from the same manufacturer. We did say this experiment was easy. Label the torches for easy reference.

Place the three torches in a semi-darkened room on a table against a blank wall. The torches should face the wall at the same distance away.  This should be about one foot. Position the video camera so the three torches and digital clock are in focus. Start the camera and turn on the torches. Their light should reflect equally brightly on the wall. Note the time and leave the room, closing the door behind you.

Return every hour to check progress. After several hours, one torch will start to dim as the battery fades. You now know which AA battery brand is worst. You have your absolute answer when the second one starts to fade. To know precisely when this happened, rewind and fast-forward the clip, and note the time showing on the digital clock at that point.
