March 18th marked the day the Mechatronics students at the University of Waterloo finally got to show off their projects! For a specific team such as the beloved Mechatronics team, it meant that their Project Centaur was finally put on display! The event that made this possible was the Mechatronics Engineering Design Symposium at the Davis center at the University of Waterloo. For some background, Mechatronics is a mixture of mechanical, engineering, electrical and science studies.

What’s the Project?
Project Centaur was developed by 5 Mechatronics students–Eric Shi, Adam Heins, Rahul Rawat, Wesley Fisher, and Jesse Lopes–as part of their major assignment for the year. The main task for the Robot being built is to help with lowering the radiation in nuclear power plant boiler rooms. We have posted updates on the building process and other interesting facts on the UPS Battery Center blog if you’d like to check it out!
If you don’t have the time then no worries, here are some basic updates:
- The Mechatronics team have won $1000 as part of the Engineer of the Future Fund!
- The team used the Gazebo Sim Tool to simulate the features they wanted in the robot before creating them
- The team also used the ST Robotics R12 as the arm for their robot. The arm’s design helps to measure the thickness in the pipes in the boiler rooms thereby making their goal more achievable.
- In addition, they also made it to the finals of the Norman Esch Entrepreneurship Design Pitch! For a detailed post, check out the UPS Battery Center blog.

The Team:
The 5 members of the Mechatronics team were elated to present Project Centaur! One of our team members was able to attend the symposium and he had a lot to say about it! He described it as incredible, filled with energy and focused on Eric and his teammate’s project!
Here is a little statement made by the team: “The event was very rewarding, after months of hard work it was great to be able to show the project to so many people. It was great interacting with the public as well as people from the industry who were familiar with the field of work.”
We are extremely proud of the team and what they have achieved! We wish them nothing but the best in their next projects and in the future! Many of the team members are graduating with many exciting plans such as Eric Shi who is interning at Apple!
We cannot wait to hear what else the team will be up to. If you’re also interested to know, please check back on our website for more updates!
