A few weeks ago we did a general post on Climate Change disaster tips and this week we’re back to give more! However, this post will be  more specific to food.

As we have mentioned in all of our previous posts about Climate Change,  it is a danger that is posing a threat to all of us. There is a 97% consensus from scientists that Climate Change is real and I don’t know about you but that’s enough for me to worry. So, if you want to be food-ready in case of an emergency, check out the tips below!

What You Need To Know:

  1. Make sure you have food that will last you at least 3 days or 72 hours. If you can, make it more.
  2. Make sure the food is enough for you, your family members AND your pets.
  3. Plan ahead! If you or your family members have dietary restrictions, ensure you have a plan to take care of that in case of emergencies.
  4. Baby formula should be prepared in case of babies and nursing mothers.
  5. Disposable utensils are a must!
  6. Canned foods are going to save you so you need to have a can opener!
  7. Ensure to store your food in a cool and dry area.
  8. Check on your emergency food at least every six months to ensure it is still in good condition.
  9. If there’s a power outage, eat strategically. First eat the food in your fridge, followed by the one in your freezer then you can dig into your emergency supply.

What Food You Need:

  • Choose foods that are high in calories and carbohydrates so that you can sustain yourself on smaller but denser foods.
  • Also, choose foods that have, at the minimum, a 6 month shelf life.
  • As mentioned above, canned & ready-to-go foods are your best bet:
    • Foods like: dried fruits; canned fruit, soup, and vegetables; crackers; rice; dried corn; instant cereals; nuts; peanut butter & jelly…etc.
  • Lastly, don’t forget to pick foods that are familiar to you and your family so that consuming them is comforting in times of stress.

We hope this was informal enough and that you feel a little more ready to tackle on emergencies!
