Experiment: Battery Engine

Making a battery engine is very simple.

Things needed:

  • Battery
  • Magnet
  • Copper wire

 

Procedure:

  • Wrap the copper wire around the battery at least 20 times. Remember to leave at least two inches of coil at both ends.

  • Remove the coil of wire from the battery, set the battery aside.
  • To keep the coil of wire intact, tie the coil using the free ends. A tape could also be used. Make sure that the free ends are aligned.

  • Remove the protective covering at the ends of the wire. Set the coil of wire aside.
  • Make two holders, one for each end of the battery. Using a new wire, make a loop at one end. The loop will serve as attachments for the coil of wire done earlier.

  • Take the holder and connect the other end to the battery. One will be attached to the positive end, while the other to the negative end.

  • Attach the coil of wire to the loop.
  • Place a magnet on top of the battery.
  • Gently spin the coil of wire. Watch as the coil of wire spins endlessly.

Additional Tips:

  • To create a simple switch, insert a paper between the wire and battery at one end. To make the coil turn, simply remove the paper.

  • A paper clip could be used to make the holders.
