Masks Matter More with Distance Rule Doubt

Face masks matter more with distance rule doubt increasing, following a research report in Journal Science according to Fox News. Fox’s post of May 28, 2020 claims the six-foot distance World Health Organization recommends may be insufficient. That’s because experts now claim airborne particles can float in indoor air for hours. And still be infectious if a human breathes them in.

Masks Matter More with Distance Rule Doubt Growing

Chia Wang of National Sun Yat-sen University in Taiwan, believes the majority of new COVID-19 infections travel through the air. Kimberly Prather and Robert Schooley of the University of California, San Diego concur with him. They say this happens when infected people without symptoms, are busy breathing out or speaking.

Those three experts believe measures to prevent this ‘aerosol affect’ are even more important than before. Therefore face masks matter even more with distance rules in doubt, because they are our last defense against attack. And can help prevent cross-infection if successful. Widespread testing closes the loop, and enables health care authorities to retain control until we have a vaccine.

Face Masks Reduce Non-Contact Transmission by 75% in Test

It’s not ethically possible to test this hypothesis in practice. Ground-breaking work in China however proved the principle with hamsters. The scientists placed a mask over selected cages of the animals, and introduced fans to distribute their respiratory droplets.

1… When they masked the infected cage the transmission rate was 15%

2… But when they covered the healthy cage the infection rate increased to 33%

3… However, the rate of cross infection was above 60% with no mask barriers

We have learned the WHO six-foot distancing guideline dates from the 1930’s when technology could not detect tiny droplets. Face masks matter even more now, with distance rules in doubt to that extent. Moreover it’s worth noting Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, and South Korea all implemented universal masking. And all were highly effective in reducing infection spread in their territories.
