Household Checklist to Prepare for COVID-19

Our ancestors learned to respond to changes in their immediate environment in order to survive. This embedded in our culture as ‘the more things change, the more they remain the same’. Centers for Disease Control put out a household checklist to prepare for COVID-19. We found it cast a fresh light over what is fast becoming the new normal, and decided to share.

Back to Basics On an Old Familiar Topic: Preparing

1… Stay informed about what’s happening with the disease in your neighborhood. Review your list of emergency support, and other helpful organizations. Is there anybody you should add, or remove from your emergency contact list?

2… Prepare for the possibility of a family member contracting the disease. Which room will they shelter in, will they have direct access to a bathroom, and how will you feed them and stay in touch?

3… Continue taking preventative measures at home. Sanitize hands frequently, keep your hands away from your face, shelter if you are sick. Wear a fresh mask and keep a healthy distance from others when you leave home.

Household Checklist to Prepare for COVID-19: Action

We’ll be following up with a short series of posts detailing how to care for a sick family member, and what to do if we fall ill. After that, we’ll discuss quarantining at home, and how to take care of the family’s emotional health.

The CDC’s household checklist to prepare for COVID-19 includes taking extra precautions for elderly, and vulnerable family members. Perhaps it’s best to assume everybody who goes near them is carrying the virus? The last one on the checklist was a new one for us. Centers for Disease Control suggest not letting family pets interact with people outside the household.

That’s because pets also carry certain bacteria, viruses, parasites, and fungi that can cause illness if transmitted to humans. And they could conceivably carry the coronavirus too. The workaround is to sanitize our hands after we touch, or feed them. Their emotional support is too important to let go.

I work from home where I ponder on the future of the planet, and what lies beyond in the great hereafter. Sometimes I step out of my computer into the silent riverine forests, and empty golden beaches for which the area is renowned. Richard
