A problem shared is a problem halved says an age-old proverb. If you became a proxy educator for your kid during COVID, take heart you are not alone. That’s because a bunch of American scientists discovered you may be ‘experiencing elevated distress’ if your proxy student is also struggling. Distance learning is stressful for parents too, even if your other half may not understand.
Not Just Teachers: Distance Learning is Stressful for Parents
The researchers took their inspiration from reports of stressful classroom teaching. Would the same apply to home-coaching distance learners too, they wondered. They established the following that inspired us to write this post. Parents with at least one child struggling with distance learning are:
1… 19% more likely to report anxiety than other parents
2… Also 22% more likely to experience depression
3… And 20% more likely to have trouble sleeping too
According to Phys Org News, those parents are also 20% more likely to feel worried. And 23% less inclined ‘to have interest or pleasure in doing things’.
Why Is This So Important to Warrant a Post on Its Own?
Our children are the world’s potential future leaders in the sphere they choose, and education will play an important part. Distance learning is stressful for parents, but there’s a knock on to kids’ academic success.
Research team member Alberto Ortega explains. ‘Students’ academic success ultimately relies on their parents’ emotional health during this fragile time. This sets the learning environment for their children. Without proper support, both parents and students will likely suffer too.’
He encourages schools locked down for COVID to have open channels with proxy parent teachers. ‘It is crucial for parents to be open about their needs,’ he believes. ‘And to communicate with their schools when they need additional help.’
