South Australia and the country generally have COVID stats that should make most of the world green with envy. Two factors have largely contributed to this. These are (a) a socially cohesive population, and (b) a policy of coming down hard at the first sign of a surge. But then you have to, if you are on your own ‘down under’. This is why South Australia restricts so intensively as the Delta variant nips.
Not Quite a Lock Down in South Australian Terms
The state government has introduced restrictions other governments might hesitate to impose. These include a ban on indoor dining, closure of non-essential retail, and gyms and indoor fitness facilities. As well as cancellation of contact sport, and closure of personal care services. But that is not all.
Further controls while South Australia restricts as Delta variant nips include limiting private gatherings to ten people. And requiring face masks at high-risk settings, public transport and shared indoor spaces. The trigger for these ‘level-four’ restrictions pulled when the daughter of a positive man also tested positive for the coronavirus.
One Chance Only while Australia Restricts as Delta Variant Nips
‘This is not a lockdown, but it is clearly significant restrictions on public activities within our community,’ the police commissioner said. ABC News explains the daughter’s second-tier infection has ‘significantly escalated concerns’.
‘We only have one chance to get this right, we are very concerned about this situation’ the police commissioner added. ‘If we can ease these restrictions we will, but if we wait until we get all of the information, it can often be way too late.
‘We don’t want the long-term heavy restrictions we’re seeing in other parts of the world, other parts of the country.’ Do you think Australia is doing the right thing? What other options does it have to control the situation?
