There can be nothing normal about a million COVID deaths according to Scientific American. At least that’s what Stephen W Thrasher wrote on February 10, 2022. Stephen is inaugural Daniel H Renberg Chair of Social Justice in Reporting. His article is hard-hitting and he clearly intends it to be a wake-up call.
The U.S. Is Approaching One Million COVID Deaths
Worldometer statisticians estimated the actual U.S. death toll at 979,725 on March 2, 2022. This puts the nation just 20,275 short of Stephen’s looming million. Moreover, the United States apparently has the highest number of COVID deaths of any country. And yet Stephen says ‘mass media are downplaying it’.
New York Times described the first 100,000 deaths as ‘an incalculable loss’ in May 2020. Indeed, it devoted its entire front page to printing names of some of the deceased. But those times are long past, and it is time to move on perhaps. Some mainstream publications are beating drums to normalize mass death statistics and suffering according to Stephen.
There is Nothing Normal About a Million COVID Deaths
There is nothing normal about a million COVID deaths when one in every 500 children lost a caregiver. Because this could cause incalculable damage to their incorporation in society.
Stephen asks whether it is rational to drop mandates at a point ‘where the virus remains widespread, yet at more manageable levels’ according to White House. We publish this post in the interest of presenting a broader canvas of what is happening around us.
There is nothing normal about the experience we have been through, yet it does make sense to take opportunities presented by vaccinations and a milder Omicron strain. Protection is becoming a private matter at one’s own discretion. Stephen’s article reminds us not to overlook a million deaths. Many might have been avoided if we knew what we now know.
