A battery is a device that turns chemical energy into electrical energy in the form of a static electrical charge. A capacitor, on the other hand, merely stores electrostatic energy in an electrical field. Hence they perform a similar role in terms of storing energy, while operating differently. We share news of a recent capacitor breakthrough that could greatly increase battery density.
Potential Better Battery Life Thanks To Capacitor Breakthrough
Scientists from Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science at Washington University, St Louis, may have stumbled over something quite remarkable during another project. This discovery lead them to ‘a new material structure’ that could enable capacitors to store energy for ‘much longer’.
Rory Bathgate writing in Live Science on May 8, 2024 believes this could potentially enable EV batteries with ‘19-times higher energy’. The researchers describe their new material composites as ’heterostructures’.
Science Direct defines these innovations as ‘semiconductor structures in which their chemical composition changes with position’. However, for our purposes, this development ‘reduces the speed at which energy dissipates without affecting their ability to charge quickly’.
The Live Sciences contributor suggests this unintended capacitor breakthrough, ‘could be the foundation for better battery life across consumer devices including electric vehicles, as well as greater flexibility in grid-scale energy storage’.
How Would This New Direction Work in Practice?
This is deep science and we can only skim the surface. By way of introduction, ferro electric capacitors retain energy poorly compared to batteries. However, when they polarize and discharge they do retain a memory.
The new material from Washington University, St Louis is in a physical and chemical balance between conductivity and non-conductivity, allowing it to more effectively retain energy.
The researchers found a tiny gap in the core that enabled them to increase the relaxation time during which the capacitor lost charge. Widening this could increase capacitor energy density by a factor of nineteen times, and just possibly that of a battery too in future.
