Spring is in the air today as we write, and some of us may be glad the winter’s passing. The folk in our fire departments would like us to remind you that its also springtime for smoke detector battery changes too. And that it’s a false economy to delay this important task, and risk not knowing you are near a fire.
Change Smoke Detector Batteries in Spring and Autumn
North Americans traditionally service their smoke alarms on memorable occasions, triggering their memories. Many of them replace their batteries in Autumn when the clocks set back one hour.
And then they repeat the process six months later, when the clocks go forward, and it is Springtime for smoke detector battery replacement again. Numerous media use the opportunity to remind us that the time has come around again.
A chief of a fire department urged Wtap news channel to pass the reminder on, as do we. That’s because the chief believes we should check and / or change our smoke alarm batteries, before their they start running down.
Active Smoke Alarm Detectors Can Be Life Savers
Changing smoke alarm batteries on memorable dates is a great idea, especially when popular media repeat the message. It’s also important to remember that these monitors could save our lives, if a fire breaks out while we are asleep.
Doing the job is dead simple too. Simply press and hold the TEST button on the unit. If this triggers a loud alarm, then you should be good for another six months. But, if you get any other reaction, or none at all, change the battery, and rerun the TEST right away.
If you do not have a smoke detector in your home, then you could be at risk. If in any doubt speak to your local fire department, on how to go about doing this properly. Locate one alarm near the entrance, and a second one near the bedrooms. You should sleep better at night, now you know you have smoke alarms on standby.
