Aeroporti Di Roma (ADR) is a private company, managing and developing Rome’s Fiumicino and Ciampino passenger airports. ADR announced the arrival of Italy’s largest battery storage at Fiumicino Airport, on June 3, 2025. This equipment integrates second-use batteries from three different automotive brands, which is another first for the European nation. The project should abate 16,000 tons of CO2 over the next ten years.

Fiumicino Airport Batteries Support Climate Effort

Aeroporti Di Roma has also opened a solar farm along the eastern side of the airport, in a strip 1,5 miles long. This will supply renewable energy to the airport’s storage batteries, and abate a further 11,000 tons of CO2 per year.

Abating CO2 reduces the amount of carbon released into the atmosphere, over time. This is a critical step towards mitigating climate change, by transitioning to a low-carbon economy.

Storage batteries that recharge using solar energy, make power available around the clock. This is regardless of whether it is night, or the sun has disappeared behind thick cloud.

Electricity Independence is Critical at International Airports.

The recent electricity outage at Heathrow Airport, underlines the need for 100% grid redundancy at critical installations. Battery storage remains the only reliable way to ensure solid backup, if a primary source fails.

The Aeroporti Di Roma project at Fiumicino Airport, successfully manages different batteries from car makers Nissan, Mercedes-Benz, and Stellantis. The contractor has repurposed 762 battery packs and modules, into ten-megawatt-hour battery storage at Fiumicino Airport. This is an important step along the road to a greener economy.

About Author

Electricity has always intrigued me. I have been writing about batteries and energy storage for more than ten years, and have published over 4,000 articles on this website. During that time, I have researched developments across lead-acid, lithium-ion, sodium-ion, flow batteries, and emerging energy-storage technologies. My goal is to explain complex battery concepts in clear, practical language that anyone can understand. My writing career began unexpectedly after leaving the corporate world. What started as a search for a new direction gradually became a fascination with batteries, renewable energy, and the science that powers modern life. Writing may not have made me wealthy, but it has given me the opportunity to explore an industry that continues to evolve in remarkable ways.
