A Day Is a Long Time in COVID Vaccine History

A day is a long time in politics. While we try our best to avoid those, they do still intervene. When future generations look back at the pandemic, they may wonder was science or politics in charge? A day was a long time in COVID vaccine history yesterday, as some haves still refused their shots. While the world’s poor, who will always be with us continue wondering will vaccine ever be mine.

Mix Them Up and Boost Them, Says Vaccine Drenched United States

The United States has an overabundance of vaccine stocks. That’s only fair, since they developed them with tax payer money.  Unfortunately, their strong independent streak has caused 40% of their people to remain unvaccinated. And the proof of the consequences is in their stats.

The U.S. Federal Drug Administration widened their range of options too. Pfizer, Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson COVID vaccines are now all approved as boosters. These may now be mixed or matched. Americans may choose to have any of them regardless of their primary brand.

Have Your Jabs or Stand in the Corner, Warns United Kingdom

Meanwhile the United Kingdom has had a slightly better response. With full vaccination rates standing at 68%, 71%, 71%, and 65% for England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland respectively. The English government celebrated the achievement by severely pruning back on COVID-19 restrictions.

Unfortunately, their ball bounced badly and there are reports of health services being under strain. The Health Secretary believes the services are ‘sustainable’, although ‘cases could rise to 100,000 a day’. If enough people don’t get vaccinations we will have to face Plan B, he warns. This includes wearing face masks and working from home again.

A Day Is a Long Time in COVID Vaccine History While the Poor World Waits

A large share of the world needs to be immune to the virus to bring this pandemic to an end. Having everyone getting the disease would help, although the vaccines cope better with different strains. And moreover, the world’s poor have to survive without decent healthcare facilities.

Tragically, COVID-19 vaccines have still not reached many poor countries in significant numbers. There’s responsibility on both sides for that, we know. Meanwhile World Health Organization warns the pandemic will continue to roll on into 2022, providing more time for more deadly strains to develop and spread.

A day was a long time in COVID vaccine history yesterday. How many more uncertain days wait ahead of us? Only 2.8% of people in low-income countries have received at least one dose. Are we missing something in our model? This is simply not good enough!
