Don’t we just wish our laptop batteries would last forever, or at least stop slowing down. We overlook the fact we have had the same battery for years, and blame everything else when they run down faster. We wrote this post to remind ourselves that a longer-lasting laptop battery depends on our cooperation, and following through on three very important tips:
Adjust Thinking for Climate Change
We are going to have to adapt to more extreme weather in future. This may include more heatwaves and severe cold snaps. Our laptop batteries dislike these severe temperature changes too.
Intense cold can temporarily shorten run time between recharges. Very hot days may make this change permanent. We need to protect our laptops from extreme weather as best as we can.
Longer Lasting Batteries Need Love
We don’t feel good on an empty stomach. Laptop batteries feel the same way when they run down flat. If we want a longer lasting laptop battery, or phone battery for that matter, then we should keep it in its comfort zone.
The sweet spot for batteries is between 20% and 80% state of charge. If we regularly allow our laptop battery to discharge fully, then we could wake up in the morning and find it runs down in half the time we expect.
Don’t Use a Cheap Laptop Charger
The battery charger that comes with a laptop is quite a sophisticated device. It fine-tunes the incoming electrical current to exactly what the laptop battery wants. It also stays in touch with the battery management system.
We don’t have the same level of safety with a cheap pirate charger. If it delivers too much electricity, it might permanently damage our laptop. If it keeps charging a full battery, well we know what could happen next!
A Longer Lasting Laptop Battery Pays Off
Our three tips might seem inconvenient in the middle of a busy day. However, that pain soon fades into insignificance compared to a laptop that refuses to start. We don’t want this happening to you or anyone else, and that’s why we wrote this post.
