Scientists at Kings College London, England have been on a mission to firm up on early symptoms of coronavirus infection. Their work is important. That’s because (a) early detection enables faster quarantine. And (b) earlier treatment keeps more people out of hospital. Their study revealed unexpected relationships between age, gender and early COVID-19 symptoms we report on here.
How the Scientists Uncovered Those Relationships
Kings College researchers used self-reported data from ZOE COVID Symptom Study to analyze COVID-19 indications. Those signs included persistent cough and loss of smell, as well as less usual abdominal pain, and blisters on the feet.
They built a model estimating the probability of an individual being infected with the COVID-19, hoping this would facilitate ‘timely self-isolation and urgent testing’. They then normalized their findings by age and gender. It was at this point they discovered the relationships that are the subject of this post.
Early COVID-19 Symptoms by Age and Gender
Their findings are broad and detailed as per the Lancet Digital Health report we link to below. The following are therefore just a summary of major inks between age, gender and early COVID-19 symptoms.
COMMON AGE-RELATED SYMPTOMS
1… People over 60 did not have significant loss of smell. Those over 80 seldom reported it, but were more likely to have diarrhea
2… Persistent cough was commoner for those 40 to 59, compared to those 80 and older. But the older group were more likely to have chills or shivers.
3… However, respondents aged 60 to 70 were most likely to report chest pain, unusual muscle pain, shortness of breath, and loss of smell.
COMMON GENDER-RELATED SYMPTOMS
1… Men were most likely to report shortness of breath, fatigue, chills and fever.
2… Women were more likely to report loss of smell, chest pain and a persistent cough.
The above signs just indicate trends. You do not necessarily have COVID if you show them. Take the test. Protect yourself with the vaccine.
