The Global Battery Alliance (GBA) battery passport flagship is an initiative to advance battery recycling, through transparency. The general idea is to educate customers to make responsible battery purchases. And thereby to advance the ideal of a sustainable, circular energy economy. The alliance announced its proof of concept at World Economic Forum on January 18, 2023.
How Broad-Based Is This Initiative?
Mining Review Africa explains the goal is a digital data base, which stores critical information about battery types and brands. This information will include ‘greenhouse gas emissions during material sourcing, processing, and manufacturing of batteries. And also issues of child labor and human rights violations’.
This project is the brainchild of a consortium of organizations, spanning the battery cycle from mining to recycling. They include the likes of Audi, BASF, CATL, Eurasian Resources Group, Glencore, LG Energy Solution, Umicore, Tesla, and Volkswagen AG.
Other contributors include leading non-governmental and international organizations, making the initiative truly representative. Hence the battery passport flagship is something we can take seriously, in our search for a sustainable battery chain in our rapidly growing industry.
How Will the Battery Passport Flagship Roll Out?
The proof of concept announced at World Economic Forum demonstrates it is feasible, according to Mining Review Africa. Dr. Robert Habeck, German Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, praised it when he said.
“The battery passport proof of concept presented today is a very impressive first tangible result of the GBA, which my ministry has been supporting since 2019. It utilizes the digital world to facilitate the de-carbonization of the real world, and to promote circularity.”
The next step will involve bench marking the data, and issuing quality seals based on sustainability performance. Consumers will be able to click these links to access specific battery data on their devices. “Batteries are the new oil,” comments T&E’s senior director for e-mobility Julia Poliscanova. “But we must avoid the mistakes of the oil age”.
