More interesting information continues to emerge from China during the wrap up of what happened in Wuhan. New York City doctors reviewed an unpublished study about the unexpected benefits of a heartburn drug for patients. According to San Francisco Medical Center some muscle relaxants bring the acid reflux condition on. NYC doctors wondered could this common medication work wonders for Covid-19.
Could This Common Medication Work Wonders on Covid Patients?
Anything that helps alleviate the disease would be a wonderful thing. However, we strongly recommend you don’t increase your dosage, or start taking heartburn medication without consulting your doctor. Medicine can react in unexpected ways as the Wuhan doctors discovered, and these are not always to our advantage.
The Chinese doctors might not have believed this common medication could work wonders at first. That was, until they noticed some poorer patients were surviving longer than wealthier ones and compared their lifestyles. They discovered the former were taking a common heartburn product. While their wealthier counterparts were taking a more expensive drug.
Another Example of a Drug Working in an Unexpected Way?
Dr Kevin Tracey, president of Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research says there are many coincidences in history. Some 187 patients at Northwell Health facilities enrolled in the clinical test after he decided to investigate. Results should be forthcoming in three weeks’ time. However, there is no guarantee the heartburn medication will repeat the result the Wuhan doctors noted.
The active chemical in the drug decreases stomach acid production by blocking the action of histamine. Histamine plays a role in the inflammatory response to foreign pathogens leading to itching. It could therefore theoretically stop the SARS-Cov-19 virus from replicating Dr Kevin Tracey says.
Moreover, an independent study by Florida-based Alchem Laboratories included the heartburn medication in its list of possibilities of Covid treatments. We are not convinced this common medication could work wonders. However, we believe no hope should be overlooked under the current circumstances.
