Is COVID Still More Dangerous Than Driving

New York Times was wondering on April 17, 2022 how dangerous the coronavirus still is. After all, many of us have our vaccines and boosters, and quality face masks are readily available. As cases begin to climb again, we wondered is COVID still more dangerous than driving.

Or Is Driving Now Less Dangerous Than COVID

We stumbled over something we did not expect when we visited Wikipedia. Apparently, the rate of traffic incidents, speeding, and fatalities increased in U.S. during 2020 and 2021, despite road traffic decreasing. A report by National Safety Council puts this down to driving at excessive speeds.

Since then road statistics returned to previous levels. Moreover, and so have mask mandates with some free testing sites also closing. It’s increasingly up to us how to assess, and respond to the community health risk as we perceive it.  However, countless millions of us have still not received vaccinations, let alone boosters.

We Still Wear Our Seat Belts and Drive Considerately

We’ll grant there are exceptions, although we believe that headline is generally true. Could this be because road traffic enforcement has a high profile? Compared to that, ‘we’re doing a really terrible job of communicating COVID risk’ according to an epidemiologist at University of Texas.

New York Times continues by remarking how ‘some scientists are thinking anew about how to discuss COVID risks’. While others they say are seeking innovative ways to compare COVID-19 risks with other dangers we face, including is COVID still more dangerous than driving.

The Peterson – Kaiser Family Foundation says COVID-19 ranked among the leading causes of death in U.S. during the pandemic. For example, ‘in January 2022, COVID-19 was the number 1 cause of death for people age 45-84′. While in February 2022 ‘nearly as many people died of COVID-19 as the typical deaths from heart disease’.

I work from home where I ponder on the future of the planet, and what lies beyond in the great hereafter. Sometimes I step out of my computer into the silent riverine forests, and empty golden beaches for which the area is renowned. Richard
