Disposing of Our Used Tissues During Quarantine

We are exploring every aspect of the Covid-19 epidemic. Our mission has taken us into aspects of medicine we never thought we’d mention. Today we tackle the delicate subject of disposing of our used tissues during quarantine. Tissues that are catching droplets from sneezes and coughs. That’s because this is a very important aspect of our personal hygiene during the coronavirus epidemic.

Introducing the Delicate Subject of Used Facial Tissues

Our ancestors may have used the backs of their hands when they sneezed. A 17th century French explorer was surprised to find Japanese citizens blowing their noses into ‘soft silky papers’. They only used them once before they threw them to the ground. However, they expressed surprise at their visitors picking them up.

The name ‘tissue’ derives from the 18th century English word atishoo (pronounced a‧tish‧oo /əˈtɪʃuː/) representing the sound of a sneeze. Kimberley-Clark resolved the semantics after they developed Kleenex for removing cold cream. With that as background, let’s move on to the delicate subject of disposing our used tissues during the Covid-19 outbreak.

What to Do with Used Tissues Especially During Covid-19

Most websites we visited coyly advised we ‘dispose of them’ which to be honest could mean anything or nothing at all. We were however well pleased after we stumbled over the gentleman in the video above.

Further investigation revealed Michael P Hirsch, M.D. is a medical director and specialist surgeon. So to recap, and put the delicate subject of disposing our used tissues firmly to bed here are the rules.

First, don’t leave your ‘atishoo’ on your tissues lying around where they could contaminate something. Pop them in a labelled waterproof bag right away, and remember to keep the neck tightly closed. Seal and add this bag to the garbage on collection day, and send it on its way for recycling.

I will not deny I am obsessed with it when I have the time. I live in Margate on the Kwazulu-Natal south coast of South Africa. I work from home where I ponder on the future of the planet, and what lies beyond in the great hereafter. Sometimes I step out of my computer into the silent riverine forests, and empty golden beaches for which the area is renowned. Richard
