The 2021 Netherlands COVID-19 vaccination campaign took an early knock, after reports of excess deaths in Dutch nursing homes. And as a result, there were concerns for the safety of residents aged 65 and over with comorbidity health risks. However, a retrospective study by Amsterdam University Medical Centers in Holland investigated Dutch nursing home deaths after vaccinations, and found no causal link between them.
Dutch Nursing Home Deaths After Vaccinations Not Related
The research first appeared in Journal of American Medical Directors Association on August 25, 2022 (see link below). Now this is the official journal of that body, and hence credible. A summary report in McKnight’s Long-Term Care News also makes interesting reading.
That’s because McKnight’s confirms there were FEWER Dutch nursing home deaths AFTER vaccination for COVID-19, than before. The data came from 21,762 senior residents at 73 Dutch nursing homes, who had one or two vaccinations between January 13 and April 16, 2021. However, the data also allowed for age, gender, type of care, comorbidities, and date of entry, discharge or death as applicable.
- The researchers first calculated the likelihood of their sample dying with 30 days of a COVID-19 vaccination.
- Then they compared this with their mortality risk (chance of dying) before the coronavirus pandemic began.
What the Researchers Found When They Compared
The team from Amsterdam University Medical Centers in Holland first adjusted their results to allow for age, gender, type of care, and comorbidities, and then they ran the numbers and reported as follows:
‘We found no indication that risk of death in nursing home residents increased after COVID-19 vaccination,’ they said. ‘These results therefore indicate COVID-19 vaccination in nursing homes is safe, and could furthermore reduce fear and resistance towards vaccination.’ Moreover, as McKnight’s notes the risk of death was even lower after the second vaccination.
