A fire broke out at a General Motors assembly plant on December 19, 2023, where they were assembling electric vehicles. The flames that erupted from the battery container were so severe they lost two shifts’ worth of production. But this time, the GM Factory Zero battery fire was an industrial accident, not a battery fault triggering a chemical reaction.
What Caused the Battery Fire at GM Factory Zero?
GM Factory Zero is the company’s first manufacturing plant set aside for electric vehicles using lithium-ion batteries. The accident, and subsequent blaze occurred when forklift blades penetrated a battery container while lifting it. The fire released acrid smoke that spread beyond the shipping area into a large part of the factory.
We can only assume the incident occurred after a forklift blade penetrated a lithium-ion battery case. The chemistry inside could have entered a chain reaction releasing carbon monoxide, methane, hydrogen cyanide, hydrogen fluoride and hydrogen chloride, according to Reuters.
There Is Still a Lot We Do Not Know, Admits Fire Chief
There have been several fires at the GM Detroit plant relating to lithium-ion batteries previously. None the less, Detroit Fire Chief James Harris admits, “There is still a lot we don’t know about this type of fire because it is new. But it is coming and it is not going to stop. We are doing a lot of research, going to other cities.”
The official report confirms the fire chief’s concerns according to a news item in Detroit Free Press. “There was an autonomous electric car fire inside the factory,” they confirm, “that water sprinklers helped extinguish.”
The ventilation system apparently was not operating correctly, and did not allow smoke to exit the building in a timely manner. “The car fire consisted of a battery fire, toxins and smoke was in the air,” the report continues. The first responders escaped without known injuries, although they hosed the firefighters down as a precaution.
