By now we know COVID-19 will continue to come in waves and test our patience, and our resolve. Bruce Y Lee pondered on March 12, 2022 in Forbes magazine whether the next surge is building. Is a new COVID wave in Europe upon us so soon? Dare we hope this is a return of Omicron and ongoing milder symptoms?
What Evidence is There This is Happening Now?
Lee writes of ‘yet another upswing’ in U.K., Ireland, Netherlands, Switzerland, and Italy. He says Eric Topol, MD, founder and director of Scripps Research Translational Institute medical facility appears to have no doubts.
That’s because he tweeted ‘the next wave in Europe has begun’ and cited the graph we provide here. His evidence of recent COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations certainly is compelling.
Who could have expected a new COVID wave in Europe so soon after governments began lifting their restrictions? Especially after some politicians and media personalities asserted we were done with it. Lee comments with wry humor ‘the pandemic isn’t like a reality TV show we can turn off simply because we are sick of it.’
Why Is a New COVID Wave in Europe Rising Now?
The trend became evident a month after various countries and locations in Europe began lifting their COVID-19 precautions. These included reversing mandates requiring masks in indoor public spaces. The United States began relaxing similar restrictions in February / March this year.
Does this mean warnings against this are coming true? Lee says we have seen this happen before.
1… The June 2021 U.S. surge began a month after Centers for Disease Control changed face mask policy.
2… Something similar happened in November that year, after mass gatherings and travel kicked up again.
‘And now with this Omicron-fueled surge on the downswing, political leaders have instituted another round of relaxation,’ Lee observes. ‘What could possibly go wrong? What’s that quote about those that fail to learn from history being doomed to repeat it?’
