The little children in a big COVID pandemic must be going through something similar. Today we consider their prospects if Long COVID strikes at them.
The Cloud of Long COVID Stalking Children
We have no chance of stopping the pandemic while so many of us are unvaccinated. Fortunately, most of us will have mild symptoms dissipating within a few weeks, according to U.S. Centers for Disease Control. However, as Medical News Today confirms some of us will have conditions that never seem to go away.
Here we think of lingering consequences of damage to our hearts, lungs, and nervous systems, plus a fatigue that’s too heavy to push away. We are blessed these troubles affect small children and teens less, because their immunity systems are still fresh. There is however growing evidence some little children in a big COVID pandemic may have those lingering symptoms too.
Risks Little Children Face in a Big COVID Pandemic
Murdoch Children’s Research Institute published the results of a study into underage Long COVID. Their review drew insights from medical records of over 19,000 children and teens.
Those who experienced persistent COVID-19 symptoms following acute infections, reported a number of lingering problems. Those lingering issues included stomach pains, fatigue, headache, and difficulties concentrating and sleeping.
Study co-leader Dr. Petra Zimmerman explained to Medical News Today how she would prefer to see more data. Most children caught up by the pandemic show no symptoms at all, and there are often no medical records either.
Her other problem is Long COVID symptoms in children are similar to those following other traumas, including the effects of lock down. Only a few of the studies her team researched had control groups of healthy children. She needs more study data.
