The Big Apple community is getting ready to celebrate summer, and finally shake off the winter blues. All indications are this could be a humdinger of a hot one, with air conditioners running on full bore. Peak demand is a challenge for any utility hoping to optimize their supply side. Will New York battery storage make a difference this summer? We decided to find out.
7.5 Megawatts Bonus New York Battery Storage
Con Edison is Big Apple’s biggest utility provider. Yahoo reported on Jul 9, 2023 how the provider just added a 7.5-megawatt battery storage system on Staten Island. This will come online soon, they say, and be available to support the New York community this summer. And it ‘should reduce’ the chance of summer blackouts when customers turn their fans and air conditioners on high.
The utility chose to tack their New York battery storage onto to an existing utility substation. They say this will ‘minimize any inconvenience for the neighborhood’. However, this decision will also avoid the need to acquire more land and power lines, both headaches in terms of permissions. They have also chosen to use off-the-shelf technology for their project.
Con Edison Relying on Off-the-Shelf Solutions
Con Edison has elected to deploy 11 Tesla Megapacks in a proprietary container. Each of these packs contains 19 batteries with a dedicated inverter. This provides an assured way to continue operating, even if one pack or inverter fails.
“We are deploying batteries to help maintain the industry-leading reliable electric service that our region needs, and our customers deserve”. So says Con Edison’ president, Matthew Ketschke.
“The advent of large-scale energy storage technology also greatly increases our opportunities to integrate clean, renewable power into the mix,” he continues. “And transition to a low-carbon future.”
